Social Commerce: The Next Step

At dotbox, we pride ourselves on building rich eCommerce sites and simultaneously providing an engaging social experience. If there is one thing that we learned at Social Media Week 2012, it is that Social Commerce practices must consistently develop with the ever-shifting market place. Staying ahead of the curve is the name of the game.

Word of Mouth is Tops

I attended a seminar discussing the future of Social Commerce on Wednesday. Depending on your industry and where importance lies for your brand, the social tactic can drastically change from client to client. However, one fact remains consistent: word of mouth is the top influencer for consumers. We trust our friends and loved ones to not deceive us, a referral that will always have the highest “conversion rate.”  So what can a brand do to enhance their social experience?

Social Media Week 2012 – State Your Case

Social Media Week has arrived! From February 13th to 17th, over 60,000 social media fans will attend a (business) week full of seminars, events, and mixers focused on emerging trends in social and mobile media platforms. This global event is taking place in 21 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Sao Paolo, and Toyko.

There are numerous events taking place here in New York, with over 40 events per day. The best part about Social Media Week is…that it’s Social! If you don’t happen to live in one of these cities, you can still participate and enjoy most of these seminars via Livestream (you may end up getting a better view too ;) ).

I attended a panel discussion called “State Your Case: Research vs. Social Analytics” at the J. Walter Thompson Company headquarters in New York, in which industry experts discussed their viewpoints on social media and how it’s impacting corporate strategies. Continue reading →

Meet the Crew: Social Media Coordinator, Tonique Heaven

1. What is your name?

My name is Tonique Heaven. I am also called Toni and no one believes that my last name is actually Heaven.

2. Where do you consider home?

Home for me is New York, Maryland and Jamaica. I’ve spent considerable time in all these locations and I’ve grown to love them.

3. What is your role at dotbox?

My role at dotbox is a Social Media Coordinator.

4. What is a typical day like?

I am responsible for handling the social media and digital presence of  Clos-ette Too, Fragrance Rebel, Laura Geller Makeup and Theodora & Callum.

5. What is your proudest dotbox moment?

I began as an intern at dotbox, so my proudest moment was receiving an offer for a full-time permanent position.

6. Any secret talents?

I have been singing and acting in productions since I can remember. At the University of Maryland, my alma mater, I was in several main stage productions and performed in a professional play in Washington, D.C. at the District of Columbia Arts Center and the D.C. Theatre Festival, where the play won Best Drama.

7. What do you want to be when you grow up?

In an ideal world I would like to be a successful actress. But I would also be fulfilled if I progressively grow within a company and promote success within the organization. I would like to be submerged into the digital, public relations or marketing industries.

8. What is your all-time favorite advertising campaign?

My favorite advertising campaign is for the popular television show “Chopped” on Food Network. I love everything Food Network. I guess you can call me a fanatic, and even if you don’t like cooking, that advertisement will make you compelled to watch the show!

9. What is the most interesting quote/comment you have on your Facebook page right now?

“Do what you love and the money will come” and “All the world’s indeed a stage and we are merely players.”

10. If you could be the dot or the box, which would you be and why?

I would be the dot because without the dot, there is no URL.

Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and what happens if it passes (and don’t forget PIPA)

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), sounds scary right?  Well considering most internet users have violated one of the stipulations on the act at one point in their life or the past week, or the past day, we all should be scared.  Not only will this bill infringe on our constitutional rights to free speech as web users, it will revolutionize our relationship with the internet and drastically change life for millions.  Imagine not being able to search for a video on YouTube, learn something new on Wikipedia, or even post your status with a cool link on Facebook.  All of these seemingly normal actions would be taken away if SOPA passes.  Consider all the blogs you enjoy (including this one ;) ) and all of the sites you frequently visit: they all risk being censored and having their creative freedom removed across the board.  This can’t really be happening can it? Mobile Scanning and the Year Mobile Makes $$

According to eMarketer, U.S. adults currently consume more of their daily media through mobile devices (10%) than they do print (6.8%) yet the overall lag of ad dollars continues. Online Retailers Grip for a Huge 2012

It used to be that selling and building a loyal customer base online around a brand was relatively straight-forward: establish a website with static product pages and drive sales and customer loyalty through ads and maybe an email list. Continue reading →
